Current Position and Background:

  • Dr. Mellichamp has been a professor in the Biology Dept. at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte since 1976, and is the Director of UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens. He is a founding partner in HARP and serves as Senior Botanist.

Professional Experience:

  • Dr. Mellichamp’s research specialties include biology of rare and endangered plants, native plants in the Carolinas & their landscape use, Natural Areas Inventories, general information on carnivorous plants and hybridization of Sarracenia pitcher plants.
  • Dr Mellichamp has co-authored three books: Textbook Practical Botany (1983); Co-author with Peter Loewer: The Winter Garden (1997); Co-author with James R. Wells & Fred W. Case Wildflowers of the Western Great Lakes Region (1999)Dr. Mellichamp has published numerous articles and given professional presentations on: rare plants, carnivorous plants, plant collecting policy, greenhouse and gardens management, plant names, native plant landscaping, pollination biology, botanical history, native orchids, wetland plants and habitats, and winter garden plants.
  • Dr. Mellichamp has given public lectures at New York Botanical Gardens, Cullowhee Native Plant Conference, Univ. of Michigan Botanical Gardens, Toronto Rock Garden Society, American Rock Garden Society, North Carolina Botanical Garden, Various Orchid Societies, Denver Botanical Garden, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden (Cape Town, South Africa), N.C. Zoo, American Rhododendron Society Annual Convention, U.S. National Arboretum, Virginia Rhododendron & Orchid Societies, Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens, Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens, Regional Horticulture Symposia in NC, SC, VA since 1985.
  • Dr. Mellichamp has been the recipient of the following professional awards: Finalist in UNC Charlotte NationsBank Teaching Excellence Award – 1993, Assoc. of Southeastern Biologists Outstanding Teaching Award – 1994.
  • Dr. Mellichamp provides consultation for HARP projects on endangered species, habitat restoration and environmental assessments.
