I study aging, health, disability, and chronic disease using a public health perspective. My goal is to help older people live longer in better health, and to improve the quality of life and well-being among older people.
My current primary area of study is active life expectancy (ALE). ALE is a central public health indicator that measures life expectancy and the proportions of life with and without disability or chronic disease. The United States and countries throughout the world use active life expectancy to assess trends in population health. For the past seven years I have focused my ALE research on data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID). The PSID, a large nationally representative panel survey in its 51st year, allows me to follow individuals through all life stages, and to follow families both across households and through several generations.
The National Institute on Aging funded my ALE research, through the PSID, to examine effects of childhood adversity on functional status and work disability throughout adulthood (2016-2018) (J. Laditka & Laditka, 2018; J. Laditka & Laditka 2018; S. Laditka & Laditka, 2019). The Journals of Gerontology: Social Sciences published one of my ALE articles as an Editor’s Choice article with permanent open access (S. Laditka & Laditka, 2019). The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science included my ALE research in a special volume for the 50th anniversary of the PSID, published in 2018 (J. Laditka & Laditka 2018).
The Office for Rural Health Policy at the Health Resources and Services Administration funded my ALE research for 2019 to examine “deaths of despair.”
